What Is CrossFit - Volume 1

 

Well, last week was a doozy!!!!  Question Mark Week - we have to do that again!!!  Please know, the point wasn't to punish you guys for cherry picking WODS, or not looking at the movement clips that I attached to the WOD each day, and certainly not because you complain -  No, no, what kind of monster would I be if I did that!

Can you honestly answer the question - What Is CrossFit?  Not your definition, but what CrossFit was meant to be - let me save you some time, this comes directly from the published bulletin "CrossFit Journal":

"Forging Elite Fitness -

CrossFit begins with a  belief in fitness. The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness. We have sought to build a program that will best prepare trainees for any physical contingency — not only for the unknown, but for the unknowable. After looking at all sport and physical tasks collectively, we asked what physical skills and adaptations would most universally lend themselves to performance advantage. Capacity culled from the intersection of all sports demands would quite logically lend itself well to all sport. In sum, our specialty is not specializing.

CrossFit is many things. Primarily, it’s a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. He was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains). CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity). CrossFit is also the community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together. In fact, the communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component of why it’s so effective. "

What does that mean?  I can tell you what it doesn't mean - It doesn't mean that you only do WODS that include an Olympic bar, or that if you are unable to RX you shouldn't train that day, or that if you don't like rowing you skip the WOD, or that you are not a good CrossFitter because you don't lift heavy weight.  There are so many misconceptions about CrossFit that it is my intent through this blog to educate, create a forum for discussion, and to encourage you to be a true CrossFitter.

From Greg Glassman's own mouth, "CrossFit is general physical preparedness" meaning striving and working to be better in everyday functional movement, and be better in all aspects of athletism - running, pullups, rowing, gymnastics, shooting a basketball, playing tennis, hiking, bodyweight exercises, etc.  Do not be closed minded and only focus on the 'Hollywood' movements and events of our sport, but expand your abilities to be good in everything.
